Mackenzie Rose — The Other Side: Expressions of a Trauma Survivor

OPENING RECEPTION WITH BOOK READING: November 1tst, 2024, 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM

ABOUT THE EXHIBTION

Art on 1st is proud to present The Other Side: Expressions of a Trauma Survivor, a solo exhibition by Mackenzie Rose that combines visual art and poetry. Through this deeply personal collection, Rose invites viewers on a self-guided journey that explores her experiences with domestic abuse and the healing process that followed. Each artwork is accompanied by a corresponding poem from her book, Post-Traumatic Poetry, allowing visitors to follow her story chronologically as they move through the gallery.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Rose, a Ph.D. student at Virginia Tech focusing on trauma-informed storytelling and education, uses her art and poetry to process the trauma of surviving domestic violence. After enduring an attack that left her hospitalized and unable to speak, she turned to poetry as a way to reclaim her voice and share her story. Her work seeks to destigmatize trauma and give other survivors the grace to acknowledge their strength while addressing the "darkness" that remains.

You can learn more about Rose and her story here.

This exhibition provides a unique opportunity to engage with a narrative of resilience, vulnerability, and hope. Viewers should be advised that the artwork deals with themes of violence, abuse, and recovery. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence or abuse, help can be found at the Virginia Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Hotline (1-800-838-8238).
