Join Roanoke, Virginia - based architect and artist Kevin Deck for a fun and energetic watercolor workshop that will show you how to achieve realism with rich texture and fine detail in every scene you paint. This interactive session will include hands-on exercises and prompts, following detailed step-by-step demonstrations. Kevin’s passion will inspire and challenge you as he shares his approach to “seeing” then “painting” fine details and textures in scenes from southwest Virginia to NYC. This workshop is designed for intermediate/advanced students but open to all skill levels.


Watercolor Workshop Syllabus

This is a hands-on painting workshop with brief demonstrations before each painting exercise. Trial and error and experimentation is encouraged to expose each participant to the joys and challenges of this fluid medium. The pace of this workshop will allow time for individual help and coaching.

Palette setup and organization

Painting Exercise 1:  Painting Texture
Demonstration of Various Techniques for building Texture.
Weathered Wood, Rust, Broken Glass, Brick, Chain Link Fence, etc.

12:00 PM

Lunch Break: Presentation of Kevin’s work and process during
Slideshow of inspiration images and paintings
Demonstration of Image analysis on iPad in Procreate

12:30 PM

Painting Exercise 2: Texture-rich Scene
Slideshow of painting examples - Tailor’s Lodging, Silent Sentinels, VW Bus, etc.
Drawing the basic elements
Laying down the background washes
Dry-brushing, masking, layering, anderasing techniques
Adding detail, final adjustments

Individual coaching
Review
Q + A
Participant evaluation/comments/suggestions

Wrap up, clean up, group photos
