We invite you to experience "Reading Into Art," a collaboration between Art On 1st and Book No Further May 3rd - May 24th, 2024.

This unique exhibition is a heartfelt tribute to the amazing creativity we have in Roanoke, VA region, the beauty of storytelling, and the inspiration it ignites. In response to our call for artists, creators from various backgrounds have produced a piece of visual art in the medium or their choice inspired by five local literary works.

An opening celebration will take place May 3rd from 5pm - 8pm at Art On 1st - 300 1st St SW, Roanoke, VA 24011. Come meet and chat with the authors and artists!

Malone Ridge by James K. Dill

Norvel: An American Hero by Kenneth F. Conklin

This is an inspiring and uplifting story about Norvel Lee, a Botetourt native whose unwavering determination and courage allowed him to overcome obstacles and achieve greatness.

 

Cities on a Hill by Josh Urban

Two weeks is a long time when you're ninety. While America spent two weeks to flatten the curve of COVID-19, then two more, and then two more, indefinitely, the elderly in nursing homes missed holidays, family, and their last months. Some were content, others went insane. Many died alone. All were inspirational. This is a witnessing of their days.

 

Where You Come from Is Gone by Annie Woodford

A collection of poems that examines the economic and racial violence of rural America, where whiteness is a fraught and often dysfunctional identity.

 

True As True Can Be by Thorpe Moeckel

The story of Lucinda Mae explores the lifeways of rural mountain families who remain tied to traditional ways of living, such as raising hogs, poultry, hunting squirrels, and using local plants for medicine, among others.
